Why train?
A question that pops into my head often is... why keep training?
Why spend countless hours learning these skills?
Why live in a temple learning weapons and moves, when the "real world" deems these as useless or unnecessary?
For everyone that I meet at the temple, we all share a similar story. It took us time and energy to get here. Many people dedicate time away from their friends, family, and normal life to train here. Although the story is similar, the reasons are not.
Some come for a long time. To really immerse themselves in the art and lifestyle. Others come for a short time; to escape their life back home. Hoping this experience will send them into a new kind of life. While others come here wanting to change themselves. So that they can return home a different person. Each person wants to take something from what they learn home with them. Whether it be some kind of knowledge or just the experience itself.
Influence on Training
Knowing the reason for doing something has a massive impact. For training, it gives you a constant source of motivation. Also the discipline to keep doing it even when you can't give 100%. Especially in a setting like the temple. Where we train through aches, pains, and exhaustion.
The reason for training might change throughout our journey. (Mine certainly has) As long as there is a reason. Effort and consistency will follow.
If at any point in your personal journey you feel like you've lost the reason. "Check in" with yourself. Figure out why you're doing what you're doing. See if you're on the path that you want to be on. If you're not, then use this "check in" to plan out how to get back on the right path.
This is what I'll be doing over this weekend.
