January 31st - Finally Arrived at Maling Kung Fu School

My Thoughts πŸ‘€ ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• So I finally made it to this martial art school with some mixed feelings. I'm excited because the place is how it looks in the pictures and it looks as if they are expanding it even more so. The weather, so far, has been great and the people are all pretty nice.

JD (The "Tai Chi" Guy)
John (He is leaving soon though)
Josh (Will be my roommate once my quarantine is over)
Rodger (Maybe not his name but he's an Indian bodyguard getting training here, he is the "sanda" guy)
Natalia (Wants to do the splits before she leaves in a couple months)
Bryce (I think...)
Matt (A big guy trying to get healthier)
A little kid (Here with his little sister and family)
And a few other people who I really can't think of their names.

Monday is when the classes will really start but for now everyone is just relaxing or training on their own. And train on my own I did! (See the exercise section)

But, I do have mixed feelings about the place. Maybe …

January 29th - 21st Birthday η”Ÿζ—₯快乐

My Thoughts πŸŽ‚ ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• 10:00

I don't quite know what to think. This is my second birthday in China, my second Birthday in Shanghai. I remember my first Birthday in Shanghai my family and I played games together when we lived in Shanghai Center. I remember the Birthday before that I was in Illinois, I believe it was just me, my mom and my grandma. We didn't do much if I remember correctly. What I find odd is I don't remember my 18th Birthday but I remember my 17th Birthday was in California where my dad made it a ninja themed Birthday. It was just me, my mom and dad with the California sunshine and pool. Also, those cool push up lizards.

It has been really fun here in Shanghai. Though my plans here changed a lot because of the whole sickness thing, I've made the most of it. I should say we, my girlfriend and I, made the most of it as if I came to Shanghai alone I probably wouldn't have done much. I wouldn't have even learned to cook as much food as I did.

January 26th - Rainy Days

My Thoughts πŸ’ ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• It has rained every single day since I've gotten into Shanghai; that, plus the fact that there is a sickness going on, has made going out and doing things difficult. Most of the time we just stay in this little community and order groceries or food online. At "home" it is time to watch movies, study and listen to music.

It has also been a time for me to confirm my travel plans with Maling Kung Fu School. They, hopefully, will have a taxi that comes to pick me up. Arriving at the school will be an interesting experience because, even though I have looked at pictures and videos of the place, its always different to see something up close.

One of the difficult things I forgot about in China was dealing with a VPN to access certain things like this blog, Google, Instagram, Youtube and more. Sure there are Chinese alternatives that I could use but I need access to certain websites to keep in contact with family, friends and to keep studying programming.

January 25th - Chinese New Year

My Thoughts 😷 ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• Chinese New Year has come and gone yet again. It is my second Chinese New Year, or should I just say New Year, in China. I've spent both of them with my girlfriend. It is still a little weird or different celebrating a different country's or culture's holiday when you're really not apart of it but it is still fun. I was surprised to hear fireworks going off all through the night because in Shanghai fireworks are banned but that doesn't stop people from shooting them off. Overall, it was a fun Chinese New Year even though my stomach still hasn't adjusted to the food.

Another thing I have to adjust to while here is wearing a mask while walking around. Normally, I don't have to do this but there is a sickness going around in another part of China so people here are just being cautious. While walking around I normally get stared at but now that I'm wearing a mask, I feel I get looked at even more by the older folk and younger kids. I th…

January 22nd - Travelling in Shanghai

My Thoughts πŸ€” ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• I've finally arrived in Shanghai. After a long journey from Minnesota to Dallas and finally to Shanghai, I made it. No flight delays, no bad weather, just a simple day of flying. The hotel that I stayed at was pretty good. I tested my Chinese by trying to check-in and out using only Chinese with a little success but I didn't do that well. I did test myself one other time and that was to order breakfast today! This I did really well and I even understood the hotel staff on the phone, which was surprising.

I have felt weird coming back to China. A few things happened that made me think, "Yup, I'm really back in China". People staring at me, check! The crowded metro stations and sidewalks, check! People talking about me in Chinese because they think I don't understand, check! People arguing on the metro over dumb things, check! Just so many things that make me realize, no, re-realize how different life is here and in America. I'm back to…

January 18th - Programming and Two Days Left

My Thoughts πŸ€” ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• Two more days until I am in Chinaland. It is unbelievable... all that hard work paid off. Those days not eating lunches so that I could save money, budgeting really hard, all those overtime hours and changing my schedule to tackle any task. I believe that this is my next great adventure and the start of something big for me.

I don't know what the "big" thing will be but I hope I can continue to practice Kung Fu all the way to the Wudang Mountains or the Shaolin Temple. I think it would be cool to be able to do some of these great feats that you see these "Monks" do. I also think that practicing Kung Fu throughout my life will keep me healthy but also expose me to new people, cultures and experiences so that I can understand this world a little more.

I just want to be healthy and live long while doing cool things.

I've also found a couple websites that allow me to customize Kung Fu uniforms. They give you a few options like the color, ma…

January 16th - Good Food, Good Stretches, Good Viewers

My Thoughts πŸ€” ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• I'd like to thank those of you who are looking at my website and continuing to read my posts. It is really motivating for me to keep writing and improving my posts day by day. I've even began to make the pictures that I take better and better. Setting up my food, finding cool locations for poses and workouts and I'm thinking of actually purchasing a simple camera for videos and pictures. I went from 10-20 views in a month to 100 views a month and now my peak is 1000 views this month! Dang! Thank you all.

Exercise πŸ’ͺ 运动 My exercise today is the norm. I am focusing on flexibility and cardio but I am trying something out... Yoga. Not just simple stretches from yoga but a full yoga exercise. Man, it was tougher than I thought and my flexibility is not as good as I thought.

After Maling Kung Fu School I plan on trying to do some yoga classes along with martial arts classes and joining a normal gym so I can get back into weight training. It will be tough, an…

January 15th - Snow

My Thoughts πŸ€” ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• Today, I seized the day! (Even though I slept in till 10am) I've done 2 (maybe 3) hours of working out. (See below) Then I reviewed my Chinese vocabulary and finally I bought some final things I need for my trip to China, which is quickly approaching. I even meditated for 5 minutes today which helped me improve my focus. I really need to keep doing that every day and I'd like to start reading a book again too but that is for another time. (Maybe while in China?)

Exercise πŸ’ͺ 功倫 Today I did two/three hours of working out.

1st Hour: Lots of stretching and me powering through the "No Gym" workout. I don't know why today's 3 sets of that workout were hard but man they were hard. I've also started modifying it so that I do different workouts (hitting the same muscle groups) as the sets progress.

2nd Hour: Lots of power stretching and active stretching, including a long time on the straddle stretch which should help me fall into those painfu…

January 14th - The Dentist and Final Prep

My Thoughts πŸ€” ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• Besides the Dentist visit today, and Friday... I've been doing pretty well. Doing last minute stuff as I get ready for my next big adventure and I've also gotten back into training a good amount each day. Mostly doing stuff to work out my cardio, core and flexibility. I've also been trying to eat a little bit better by having a good breakfast, lunch and dinner. Seems that all the previous days of stretching and working out are paying off as I feel I'm still in good shape to do most exercises but I noticed my cardio has worsened a lot. (Those "No Gym" workout burpees kill me)

Packing for this trip is a pain because I only get 1 backpack and 1 suitcase... for a year. I'm taking clothes, medicine, gloves, a few books, charger, laptop, and a few momentos with me but fitting it all into one suit case has proven to be a challenge. I might be overthinking it but I need warm and cool clothes for summer and winter. I can always buy clothes whil…

January 12th - Some Good News

My Thoughts πŸ€” ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• Yesterday, I got my visa.
Yesterday, I bought my plane ticket.
Yesterday, I booked my hotel.
Yesterday, this Kung Fu Journey became a reality.

And then more great news, my school can change my visa type so that I can stay longer and have multiple entries into China. This is great. I'm excited, nervous, anxious and happy that this all happened yesterday. Now I have to begin packing my one suitcase and one backpack for an entire year of training... that will be tough.

Now I will leave the 20th and arrive in Shanghai on the 21st. After Chinese New Year I will be heading to Xinyi City. Man, it is finally time to start Kung Fu training. I know that this year will fly by but I want to keep writing and cataloguing what my experience is so that I can look back and remember these things.

Another looming thought is what will I do after this crazy year of training?  I want to continue my training at Qufu Shaolin School or another school but I need a lot of money... a lot…

January 10th - The Basics

My Thoughts πŸ€” ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• I haven't had any good or insightful thoughts recently besides that 2020 has been going by so fast. When I realize this it makes me think about if I'm spending my time well or not. Spending time with my mom, dad and grandma has been nice but they have their own schedules some times and I think that I don't use my own time wisely.

I read the devotional every morning
Make my bed
Brush my Teeth
Get Dressed
Eat breakfast
Stretch and lightly workout

and then my day goes on. Maybe I'll study, maybe I'll program and maybe I'll watch movies or do other things but I still don't feel that my day is spent well. I think it is because I'm a little anxious about all of my visa stuff and whether or not I will be heading to China.

Dang, just the idea of going to a new part of China is a little worrying but I have confidence in my language skills and my ability to adapt. Maybe I'm just getting impatient.

Exercise πŸ’ͺ  运动/体育 Today I have been abl…

January 9th - Focus

Daily Devotional ✞"The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!" -Matthew 6:22-23
The book speaks about having confidence in yourself and thinking good about yourself but the passage makes me think of focus. If you are not focused then you could get distracted or discouraged from your goal. Thinking positively about yourself does help you focus but also thinking about your task/goal and how to accomplish or achieve it.

Thinking positively and having good focus can take you far.

My morning Workout Exercise πŸ’ͺ 运动/体育 Today I've done many small workouts throughout the day. My back feels way better than before but learning from my older knee injury, I know to take it slow so that in the long run I won't have future problems. So, all these light workouts and light stretches are ma…

January 8th - "Recieve Kindness and Pay it Back"

My Thoughts πŸ€” ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• 11:00

These days in Minnesota are flashing by so quickly. It's already January 8th and I don't feel like I've done much so today I wanted to write a post talking about what I will do with my remaining time today. Making this post has made me realize how long it takes to write and prepare one of these too.

I'm thinking of making more things for my Instagram as well or to atleast post more often on it. Since my back is getting a little better I'm able to do more and more but (read below) my warm up is becoming more and more important since my back is injured.

I'm still dealing with Visa issues too, I sent all the files and my passport but I have to wait for them to send it back... hopefully with my visa.

I really don't have much to talk about today.

My dad did ask me a good question though, he asked: "What one of your websites is going to be used more?". He was referencing my blog and Instagram which made me think... which one …

January 6th - More Tone Training and Visa Rant

My Thoughts πŸ€” ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• My past couple days have been resting, studying, Tiger Balm and very light stretching. No working out, no muscle building, no kung fu practice. Just rest and study. Which has left me antsy and has let me realize how many little aches and pains I have in my knee, shoulder and back (all joints). It makes me wonder how I can help heal them early instead of continuing to hurt them. Maybe its all mental "ghost injuries" but we will see.

I also still have visa issues. I hope I can head to Shanghai during the Chinese New Year to see my girlfriend but this company that I'm going through hasn't been helping me very well. First it was I could get a 180 student visa, then it was I could get a 90 day student visa and now its I can get a 60 day non business visa... what ever that is. I tell ya, from what I've looked into visa wise I haven't heard of a 60 day non business visa. What that sounds like is the Tourist L visa but when we ask them what type …

January 4th - Relaxing and Recovery

My Thoughts πŸ€” ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• Friday I bought some gloves from infinitude fight and they sent me an edited draft of what my gloves would look like. They didn't change anything besides making my red stamp smoother and they look great. I can't wait to get my hands on them. The gloves I bought were the Muay Thai Agile X gloves. They should be 14 ounces and will be my first pair of "professional" fighting/training gloves.

My family and I have been spending time together, mostly talking and playing games because yesterday I learned that I will be getting my visa on time. A little unbelievable but the wheels are slowly turning towards my achieving my goal of 2019. Going to Maling Shaolin Kung Fu School. I'm still skeptical if it really will be on time but there is excitement bubbling in the back of my head.

My back still hurts so I am still recovering and I hope next week I can start training again as I've found some nice gyms nearby and I have a nice training room here.

January 2nd - Some Tai Chi and More Exercise

My Thoughts πŸ€” ζˆ‘ηš„ζƒ³ζ³• 23:30
It is a weird and unbelievable feeling but I finally have all of the paper work I need to send for my visa. All the passport photos, documents, invitation letters, and more are finally gathered together, ready to be mailed out tomorrow. In "celebration" of this fact, I have bought some sick custom muay thai boxing gloves that have a yellow and black "bruce lee" color scheme with Kung Fu written on them in Chinese. I still don't quite believe that I will be leaving on time until I have the visa in my hand and my tickets are booked. But, I am closer to going to Maling Kung Fu school.

Spending time with my parents has been nice and relaxing. I don't think I will be finding a job while I'm here as I really want to focus on spending time with them before I'm gone for a year.
Daily Devotion ✞ ζ—₯εΈΈηš„θ™”δΏ‘ I decided that after many months of studying 365 Tao that I would begin to study a book my dad gave me a while ago called Your Best …
